Five people were shot yesterday afternoon, steps away from Lockerman Bundy Elementary School in west Baltimore’s Penrose neighborhood. The victims, aged 17, 23, 24, 26, and 55, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police taped off a wide crime scene, including the school’s playground, as students were let out for the day. Police say they have no suspect or motive for the shooting, and are “begging” the public to come forward with information. This is the third incident of a gunman firing into a group of people in the last week in Baltimore.
There have been ten homicides in the city in the last week. The family of 21-year-old Deyquawn Cooper, killed last Wednesday, says that his death was a devastating accident. Two of Cooper’s cousins were charged with his murder after shifting their story about how Cooper was shot while the three were together (the cousins say they shot Cooper by accident, but initially told police that an unknown man broke in and shot Cooper).
The city will likely pay $95,000 to a woman that claims Baltimore Police took her on a “rough ride” in a police van after an arrest back in 2012. The city will also pay $125,000 to a man shot in the arm and stomach by an officer trying to disperse a crowd. In the last 5 years, Baltimore has paid out over $13 million in settlements for police misconduct, including a recent $6.4 million settlement with the family of Freddie Gray.
After its best month ever in August, Horseshoe Casino’s revenue dropped nearly 20% to $22.1 million in September. The haul was less than the casino’s September 2014 revenue (its first full month of operation) – dismissed at the time as a slow start. Less revenue means less community impact grant money, a major selling point for bringing a casino to Baltimore. In September, Maryland’s four other casinos grew their monthly revenue.
The city’s Department of Transportation is giving Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Development permission to handle landscaping and maintentance in the industrial area around City Garage, the massive new business incubator and makerspace in a former industrial garage. Sagamore has been expanding its footprint in South Baltimore ahead of construction of a new Under Armour campus at Port Covington and other developments including restaurants, shops, and a whiskey distillery. City Garage had its public debut last week during Baltimore Innovation Week, hosting the Beta City event and announcing the space’s first few tenants.
